Devon Conway, a star player for CSK, has been infected by the ‘Kane Williamson bug’ to further his education: John Bracewell

In only his second Indian Premier League season, Devon Conway played a significant part for Chennai Super Kings. He scored six half-centuries and accumulated 672 runs, with his top score being an unbroken 92 and an average that touched 52. Conway’s performance was vital for Chennai Super Kings.

John Bracewell, a former New Zealand spinner, is of the opinion that the dynamic batsman Devon Conway has been infected with the “Kane Williamson bug,” meaning that he is always learning from his mistakes and making significant strides in improving his batting approach.

Conway, a late entry into the New Zealand setup at the age of 29, caused a sensation in the world of cricket when he smashed a double hundred on his Test debut against England in 2021. He was just the seventh hitter to accomplish this feat in the longest version of the game.

Conway, who is now 31 years old, also played an important part for Chennai Super Kings in only his second Indian Premier League season. He scored six half-centuries and aggregated 672 runs, with his top score being an unbroken 92 and an average that touched 52. He was the leading run-scorer for Chennai Super Kings.

His opening partnerships, along with those of Ruturaj Gaikwad, were the foundation upon which CSK built their record-tying fifth triumph. The all-format New Zealand cricketer finished third on the IPL’s Orange Cap list, behind South African RCB skipper Faf du Plessis and Shubman Gill.

“I think he’s been an absolute magician in terms of his adaptability to all three formats, his skillset, and his (growth),” Bracewell, who played 41 Tests and racked up 102 wickets and more than 1000 runs, told Sen Radio. “I think he’s been an absolute magician in terms of his adaptability to all three formats.”

The older man, who is 65 years old, commented, “I like the way he’s becoming a better cricketer all the time, so it’s obvious he’s caught the Kane Williamson bug of being a learner, not a guy that actually just sits there and relies on being talented.”

Bracewell feels that Conway can compete with the finest in the business despite the fact that the batsman has accumulated a total of 1212 runs in Test matches, 508 ODI matches, and 632 T20 International matches.

“His game is just continuing to grow, and that is something that Kane Williamson had introduced into the New Zealand team along with (former wicketkeeper) BJ Watling. ” “His game is just continuing to progress. That’s something that Devon Conway has picked up on, and he’s moved forward with it, taking it to another degree.

Given that Williamson is unlikely to have fully healed from an ACL injury he sustained in the Indian Premier League (IPL), Bracewell believes that Conway will play an important part in the One-Day International World Cup, which is slated to take place in India in October and November of this year.

“He’s one of a series of components, but he’s certainly an important one,” said Bracewell. “He’s certainly one of the most important ones.” “One, that he is familiar with those conditions (in India), and two, that he is extremely adaptable in terms of the fact that now he is opening the batting in Twenty20.” Therefore, he possesses the adaptability to be able to go up or down the lineup and still fit in, which is one of the reasons why he is a viable candidate to replace somebody like Kane.
