The city of Chicago elected a new mayor for the very first time in over 30 years on Tuesday. Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot ended up losing her attempt for a second term on Tuesday, failing to advance to a top-two runoff in the latest example of escalating crime fears in one of the country’s major cities.

According to sources, Paul Vallas, a long-time superintendent who campaigned on a tough-on-crime platform, while Brandon Johnson, a Cook County commissioner endorsed by liberals and the Chicago Teachers Union, will face battle in the April runoff.

Lori Lightfoot surrendered this Tuesday evening, informing supporters that she’s now “rooting and praying for Chicago’s future mayor.”

Brandon Johnson, a Cook County Commissioner turned Chicago mayoral candidate, speaks to supporters upon forcing a mayoral runoff election this Tuesday, February 28, 2023, in Chicago.

Vallas’ campaign was structured on a pro-police, tough-on-crime platform, which he emphasised in jubilant remarks when Lightfoot considered Vallas and Johnson to concede.

“Chicago will be secure. “We will make Chicago one of the safest city in the United States,” Vallas stated.

The main issue over the next five weeks will be whether Vallas’ more conservative message will garner sufficient support to win in a city where the Democratic ticket received over 83percent of votes in the 2020 presidential election.

Johnson, in his address Tuesday night, provided the first hints that he will strive to unite liberals who backed other contenders in the nine-person race. He referred to each contestant by name.

Mayor Lori Lightfoot lost the reelection bid; she is the city’s very first mayor in 40 years.

Because no contender is expected to receive more than 50% of the vote in Tuesday’s election, the top two of the nine candidates who are up for election will advance to the April 4 runoff.

Lightfoot, the very first Black woman and the first openly gay mayor of a city often vilified by republicans in national debates over conflict and gun control, became known as a fiery reformer pledging a break from the corrupt practices as well as clubby governance that had long characterised Chicago politics.

However, years of squabbles over policing, teacher pay, as well as Covid-19 public health and safety policies, in addition to mounting complaints regarding long delays in Chicago’s public transportation system, have left Lightfoot susceptible, raising the startling possibility of the Second City deposing its elected mayor during the initial phase of voting.

In her run for a reelection, Lightfoot finds herself with few supporters and a slew of strong interests working against her. Vallas was sponsored by the Chicago Fraternal Order of Police. Johnson was supported by the Chicago Teachers Union. J.B. Pritzker, the Democratic governor with someone whom Lightfoot has fought, has dropped out of the race completely.
