Vallas’ campaign was structured on a pro-police, tough-on-crime platform, which he emphasised in jubilant remarks when Lightfoot considered Vallas and Johnson to concede.

Johnson, in his address Tuesday night, provided the first hints that he will strive to unite liberals who backed other contenders in the nine-person race. He referred to each contestant by name.
Because no contender is expected to receive more than 50% of the vote in Tuesday’s election, the top two of the nine candidates who are up for election will advance to the April 4 runoff.
Lightfoot, the very first Black woman and the first openly gay mayor of a city often vilified by republicans in national debates over conflict and gun control, became known as a fiery reformer pledging a break from the corrupt practices as well as clubby governance that had long characterised Chicago politics.
