Sachin Tendulkar advised his son Arjun, who made his Indian Premier League (IPL) debut in Sunday’s match between record five-time former champion Mumbai Indians (MI) and record two-time former champion Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, to continue working hard and respecting the game.

In his first IPL match, the 23-year-old all-rounder Arjun opened the bowling for MI with two impressive overs in which he got the ball to move into the right-handed batsmen early in the innings. On Sunday, he gave up 17 runs without claiming a wicket in the game.

“Arjun, you have taken another significant step as a cricketer today [Sunday]. As your father, someone who adores you and is passionate about the game, I am confident that you will continue to show the game the respect it merits, and the game will reciprocate that affection. You have worked extremely diligently to reach this point, and I am confident that you will continue to do so. It is the beginning of a magnificent voyage. Wishing you the best!” Tendulkar tweeted.

Tendulkar, who was present in the MI dugout on Sunday, and his son Arjun became the first father-son duo to play for the same club in the 15-year history of the Indian Premier League. Tendulkar played for MI from 2008 to 2013, a span of six years. The five-time IPL champion selected Arjun for the first time at his base price of 20 lakh during the 2021 auction.
