CMT Music Awards 2022 - History, List of Winners, and Many More

The CMT Music Awards are a fan-voted awards presentation honoring country music videos and performances on television. Every year, the awards show is hosted in Nashville, Tennessee, and is broadcast live on CMT (Country Music Television). CMT’s website, CMT.com, is where you can vote.

History of CMT Music Awards

The Music City News Awards were first given out in 1967 by the now-defunct Music City News magazine. To celebrate the network’s fifth anniversary, The Nashville Network (TNN) launched the Viewers’ Choice Awards, fan-voted awards show. The TNN/Music City News Country Awards were formed in 1990 when the two award ceremonies merged.

The TNN/CMT Country Weekly Music Awards were broadcast simultaneously on both networks in 2001. The awards program was renamed the CMT Flameworthy Video Music Awards in 2002, after the network’s branding strategy for its most successful videos at the time.

In 2005, the show’s name was changed to CMT Music Awards, but the format remained substantially unchanged from previous years.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the awards were postponed until October, and the CMA Fest for that year was canceled. The ceremony was originally scheduled for October 14 but was pushed back due to a scheduling problem with that year’s Billboard Music Awards.

ViacomCBS announced on June 28, 2021, that the CMT Music Awards would be aired on CBS beginning in 2022 and would be moved back to April. The new schedule immediately competes with the ACM Awards, which are held in April and were previously broadcast by CBS; the network later rejected to renew its contract to screen the ACM Awards, claiming viewership declines in comparison to the rights fees asked by Dick Clark Productions.
